The Piper football team makes just its second home appearance of the season Saturday when they host Gustavus Adolphus. Game time at Klas Field is 1:00 p.m.
Hamline is hoping to find the offensive touch it showed the last time they played at Klas. On September 17, they led Augsburg, 14-13 at halftime. The Auggies rallied for a 28-20 victory. But the Pipers showed some defensive grit by holding Augsburg's talented QB Marcus Brumm to just 123 yards passing. (The next week, Brumm threw for over 400 yards in a win at St. John's.)
They have continued to register solid defensive numbers but the offense has been struggling and were shut out again last week at Macalester in a 17-0 loss. QB Connor Sathre (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) hopes to change all that this week. Sathre leads the team in passing (281) and rushing (145) yards. Former QB Adam Meyer (Sr., Cold Spring, Minn.) has been moved to a wide receiver position to take advantage of his lanky 6-2 frame.
The defense has been led in recent by LB Olajuwan Stiffler (So., Troutdale, Ore.), who has recorded 32 tackles (including four for loss) and FS John-Michael Vandenberg (Jr., Bothell, Wash.) , who has recorded 29 tackles and an interception.
They will face a Gustvaus team that is also 0-4 and hungry for a win. One big difference between the two teams: GAC has scored more points than HU but has also lost five fumbles to HU's one. The flip side: they have given up more yards and points than the Pipers.
It figures to be an interesting matchup with two teams hungry for a win clawing after each other at Klas Field. Fans who can't make it to the game can watch the webcast
