David Croonquist played more great tennis Saturday morning. As a result, he is now just one win away from the finals of the USTA/ITA Regional Singles Championships in Saint Peter, Minn. The HU junior from North Oaks, Minn. took charge from the start Saturday morning to defeat Gustavus' Grant Leisner, 6-2,6-2 in a quarterfinal match. Croonquist will now face Brian McCarthy of St. Thomas in a semifinal match scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. If he wins, he will play for the title on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
Both players came into the tournament as part of a group that was seeded 17th.
It will be a busy Saturday for Croonquist. He and Robert Becker (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) will play in a doubles quarterfinal at 3 p.m. against Gustavus' Brooks Stapleton and Ryan Hallsten. A win would send them back on the court at 4 p.m. for a semifinal affair. That title match is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
