Croonquist Has Big Day At Regional Tennis Championships

David Croonquist had a full day of tennis Friday. And he must have enjoyed nearly every second of it. The HU junior from North Oaks, Minn. defeated two players -- including a No. 14 seed on his home court -- to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA Regional Singles Championships Friday at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minn. In addition, Croonquist teamed up with Robert Becker (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) to win a pair of matches and move to the quarterfinals of the Doubles portion of the event.

Coonquist started his day as the Pipers' only seeded player (17th). He dispatched Macalester's Evan Elderblock, 6-4, 6-1 and then dumped the No. 14 seed, Gustavus' Juan Luis Chu in a thrilling match, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. Croonquist will face another Gustie - Grant Leisner - in a 9:00 a.m. match Saturday, If he wins, he will play a semifinal match at 11:30 a.m. The championship match is Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

On the doubles side, Croonquist and Becker won twice as well. They started with an 8-3 win over a team from Coe College and duplicated that score in defeating No. 9 seed Peter Dunn and Avery Rux of Carleton. That earned them a 3:00 p.m. Saturday date against Gustavus' Brooks Stapleton and Ryan Hallsten. A win would send them on the court at 4 p.m. for a semifinal affair. That title match is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Bernard Mitambo (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) won a pair of matches in singles (including a 10-7 win in the third set of his second match) before losing in the third round. Becker won his first singles match before falling in the second round.

In other doubles action, the teams of Mitambo-Connor Hart (Jr., Dellwood, Minn.) and Sam Teitelbaum (Sr., Afton, Minn) - Andrew Lutz (Sr., Pine City, Minn.) lost their first round matches.

In the Midwest Open portion of the tournament, Teitelbaum and Derek Lutz (So., Pine City, Minn.) each won once before being eliminated. Bob Johnson (So., Elk River, Minn.) and Hart lost their first matches. The doubles teams of Derek Lutz - Brendan FitzPatrick (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and  Dylan Sperry (So., Scandia, Minn.) - Tyler Antil (So., Fridley, Minn.) also fell in their initial encounters.
