The Pipers (0-2 overall, 0-1 MIAC)  showed a major offensive improvement last Saturday in a 28-20 home field loss to Augsburg. Connor Sathre (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) passed for two TDs to Terry Schwartz (Sr., Saint Paul, Minn.) and ran for a third against the Auggies. In all, Sathre rushed for 74 of the Pipers' yards on the ground, tripling their output from the season opener at Pacific Lutheran. Josh Bain (Sr., Grand Meadow, Minn.) had a monster game on defense with 16 tackles and a forced fumble. His average of 13 tackles per game easily is the best in the MIAC this season. The defense should be helped by the return of CB Damon Woods (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) , who missed the Augsburg game due to injury. One other Piper -- punter Alex Ferguson (Jr., Kent, Wash.), ranks high as well. His 36.8 yard average is fourth in the conference.

The Pipers will face a Knight team that is also 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference but has been excellent defensively so far. They dropped their opener at home to Carthage, 16-13. Last Saturday, they held a powerful Bethel team to less than 300 yards total offense for the game. The Knights grabbed the early lead and only trailed, 14-7, after three quarters. But the Royals pulled away at the end for a 27-9 verdict. After two games, the Knights have allowed just 44.5 yards per game passing, best in the league, and rank third in overall defense.

On paper, it would appear this game will not be a duplicate of last year's wide open affair that saw the Knights pull away in the fourth quarter for a 45-21 win at Klas Field. HU trailed 24-14 after three quarters but gave up two TDs in less than a minute early in the final frame.

This is the first of two straight games away from Klas Field. Next Saturday, HU will play a non-conference game at Macalester.
