Hamline's men soccer team put up a spirited fight Wednesday against UW-Superior. Greg Northrop (So., Arden Hills, Minn.) and Michael Murphy (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored a pair of nifty goals but the Yellowjackets came up with a header in the final minute of the second overtime to deal HU a 3-2 loss at Paterson Field.
The Pipers fell to 2-4-1 overall on the season.
Northrop started things on the right foot when he redirected Sam Slagle's corner kick into the net at 31:28 to open the scoring. UWS came back, however, to tie the game shortly before halftime. The Pipers held the better of play for most of the half, however, finishing with a 10-6 edge in shots.
In the second half, the Yellowjackets grabbed a 2-1 lead at 76:28. but Murphy responded with his first goal of the year off a long feed from Slagle three minutes later to send the game into overtime.
The game stayed stuck at 2 until UW-Superior's Nate Engel scored with 55 seconds left in the second extra session. UWS is now 5-2-0 on the season.
Zach Nelson (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) recorded three saves in the first half. Spencer VonBehren (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) stopped six shots in the second half and another one in the second OT but took the loss.
Hamline heads back into conference action Saturday when Macalester travels up Snelling Ave. for a 1:00 P.M. game at Paterson Field.
