Hamline's men's soccer team put up a stout performance Wednesday but had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Concordia at Paterson Field. It was the MIAC opener for both teams. Brian Stout (So., Lake Villa, Ill.) gave the Pipers an early lead when he picked up a loose ball and drilled a hard shot into the far corner of the net just 14 minutes into the game. The Pipers kept up the pressure the rest of the half, outshooting Concordia, 13-3. But the Cobbers, who came within a goal of advancing to the NCAA tournament last year, tied the game 11 minutes into the second half.
HU goalie Spencer Von Behren (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.), who finished with five saves, held firm as CC attacked in the second half. In the first extra session, each team played tight defense and managed only one shot. It was that way for much of the second overtime as well until the Pipers unloaded three excellent scoring chances in the waning moments. Stout, who had four shots in all, was stopped twice from close range. Tyler Tallaksen (Fy., Coon Rapids, Minn.), who led the team in shots with five, also was stopped form in tight.
HU finished the game with a season high 22 shots, including 14 on goal.
Hamline is now 1-2-1 overall on the season (0-0-1 MIAC). They play twice at Paterson on the weekend, hosting conference Bethel on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Milwaukee School of Engineering visits for a non-conference Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
