The Hamline volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday night into their conference opener in Moorhead. Concordia took charge early and defeated the Pipers, 3-0. The scores were 13-25, 16-25, 15-25. Hamline now stands 5-5 overall.
For all but one HU player, it was their first experience in a MIAC conference game. Facing the number 15 rated Cobbers in their home lair was a tough task, indeed. The Pipers got off to a good start in game 1, splitting the first 10 points. But the Cobbers ran off eight points in a row and kept pressuring all night.
Frankie Miller (Fy., Grand Island, Neb.) led the HU offense with eight kills. Dani Schultz (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn.) added six. Frankie's twin sister Sammie, the MIAC Setter/Libero Of The week, contributed a dozen assists. Lacy Koss (Fy., Dodge Center, Minn) continued her team lead in digs with 16.
The Pipers, who have played just one match at Hutton Arena, will play three more matches on the road this weekend ... albeit a lot closer to home. They have a Friday night date at UW-River Falls. The Pipers then return across the border Saturday to face UW-Stout and Waldorf, also at River Falls. They return home Sept. 21 for their next conference affair, a 7:00 p.m. contest with St. Benedict.
