Pipers blank Eagles for first men's soccer win, 1-0

The first win of the season often seems the hardest. Hamline's men's soccer team did some serious sweating in the Saturday sun at Paterson Field. But it was worth it in the end as the Pipers survived being shorthanded for 38 minutes to earn a 1-0 win over Northwestern (Minn.). Greg Northrop (so., Arden Hills, Minn.) had the lone goal on a feed from Ibou Wone (Sr., Dakar, Senegal) 9:10 into the game. The Pipers had the better of play in the first half, holding a solid 6-2 edge in shots on goal.

But HU was forced to play shorthanded for the final 38 minutes of play due to a red card violation. GK Spencer Von Behrem (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) refused to budge, though. He recorded six saves in the second half and he received considerable help from a stout defense that allowed few second chances as the Pipers advanced their season record to 1-2.

Hamline starts conference play Wednesday against Concordia at home. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
