The kids grew up quickly. Hamline's young volleyball team -- complete with 12 first-year players -- hung tough and outlasted Bethany Lutheran for a 3-1 win in the opening effort of the 2011 season in Northfield Thursday afternoon. HU jumped to a quick lead in their second match of the day but fell, 3-2, to Martin Luther.
Against the Vikings, The Pipers won the first game, 25-16, but dropped a tense second affair, 25-27. They came back to win another nailbiter, 25-23 and then finished off the Vikings with a 25-18 win in Game 4.
It was a solid debut for the Miller twins. The Grand Island, Neb. natives led a balanced attack. Frankie had a dozen kills and 10 digs while Sammie had eight kills and 26 assists.
The evening session started well with Hamline winning the first game, 25-16. DMLC won the second game, 18-25, but the Pipers held on for a 25-23 win in Game 3. The last two games mirrored the tenor of the day -- close affairs. DMLC, however, found the edge when needed and claimed 25-22 and 15-12 decisions.
The Pipers will have little time to reflect on the day's action. They have another pair of matches on Friday against UMAC foes. HU faces St. Scholastica at noon and Crown at 4:00 p.m.
The Vikings are not out of the Pipers' thoughts, either. BLC will open the home season when they visit Hutton Arena on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m.
