The host Auggies struck first in the game, and out-hit the Pipers 12-to-8 through the nine inning game, but the Hamline University baseball team came out on top with a 2-1 victory at Augsburg College on Monday afternoon.

The non-conference victory moves the Pipers to 12-10 overall. They will continue with non-conference play on Wednesday, April 20, with a 2:30 p.m. double-header at home against Luther College.

Piper starter Casey Benford gave up just one run in his five-inning stint on the mound, and it came in the bottom of the first inning on an Auggie RBI single. Benford struck out six before turning the game over to Darby Nelson and Garrett Boyum in the bullpen.

Hamline tied up the game in the top of the seventh inning as Matt Pasma drew a lead-off walk. Cory Miller pinch ran for Pasma, and ultimately scored on a Jordan Buck sacrifice fly.

The Pipers tallied the game-winner in the top of the ninth inning. Much like how the Pipers scored the run to tie the game, Buck drew a lead-off walk.

Buck advanced to second on a ground out before Josh Dishop pinch ran for him. After another out, Dan Ellefson drove in the winning run with a single to left field.

Boyum then finished out his two-inning relief stint by keeping the Auggies to just a single in the bottom of the ninth, picking up the win.
