McKeag opens outdoor season with pair of NCAA provo throws

Brennan McKeag (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) had a strong day for the throwers, winning the shot put with a put of 15.66 meters (51-4 1/2). He was then second in the hammer throw to an unattached athlete, throwing 53.60 meters (175-10). Both were NCAA provisional qualifying throws.

Also in the hammer throw, Andrew Schlichting (Jr., North Oaks, Minn.) was fifth with a throw of 51.80 (169-11) and Derall King (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was ninth with a throw of 47.44 meters (155-8).

Tyson Molitor (Sr., Belgrade, Minn.) led the Piper sprinters with a second place finish in the 400-meter dash in 49.68. DJ Weil (So., Chaska, Minn.) was fifth in 49.94 and Christian Swanberg (Sr., Lindstrom, Minn.) was sixth in 50.05.

Andy Marnach (Sr., Hokah, Minn.) was third in the 200-meter dash in 22.35 while in the 100-meter dash, Juris Lebodoks (Fy., Latvia) led Hamline with a sixth-place finish in 11.24.

The sprinters then finished off the day by winning the 1600-meter relay. Marnach, Swanberg, Weil, and Molitor ran the race in 3:19.78 for the win.

Andrew Johnson (Sr., Andover, Minn.) also picked up a win on the track for the Pipers as he took first in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:28.42. Nate Dobbins (So., Rochester, Minn.) was seventh in 9:50.74.

In the 1500-meter run, Jack Deichert (Jr., Golden Valley, Minn.) had a great start to the outdoor season as he ran a 3:52.57 to finish second to an unattached runner.

Ellis Richardson (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) then had another impressive distance showing as he ran a 15:14.29 to place third in the 5000-meter run. An unattached runner placed second in the race.

Shaise Schuette (So., Anoka, Minn.) was the top finishing Division III competitor in the pole vault, clearing 4.60 meters (15-1) as he finished second to an unattached competitor.

In other field events, Amani Lee (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn.) was fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters (6-2). Travis Latzke (Fy., Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Dan Johnson (Sr., Granite Falls, Minn.) were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the long jump. Latzke jumped 6.30 meters (20-8) and Johnson jumped 6.18 meters (20-3 1/2).

In the triple jump, Ben Johnson (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) was fifth with a leap of 13.27 meters (43-6 1/2).
