Saint Mary’s took control on their home ice at the end of the first period, scoring at 16:21 on a power play and then again just before the intermission at 19:19. The Cardinals went up 3-0 just 23 seconds after resuming play in the second period.
Leveille (Sr., Appleton, Wis.) lit the lamp for the first Piper goal in conference play this season at 10:03 in the second period, cutting Saint Mary’s lead to two goals. Erin Kastner (So., Faribault, Minn.) earned the assist on the score.
The score remained 3-1 heading into the third period, with the shots on goal standing at just nine per team.
The Cardinals scored a short-handed goal at 6:34 in the third to go up 4-2. Leveille then cut the lead back down to two goals for the second time at 13:35 on an unassisted score.
However, the Cardinals put two more marks up on the scoreboard, scoring at 15:17 and 16:38 to go up 6-2.
With the conference loss, the Pipers move to 2-2-0, 0-1-0 MIAC. The Cardinals are now 2-3-0, 1-0-0 MIAC as the two teams head into the second game of the series tomorrow, Saturday, November 21, at 2:00 p.m. at Drake Arena.
