The Pipers fell by set scores of 25-12, 25-18, 17-25, 21-25, 15-11.
The Wildcats scored three quick points to take an early lead at the start of the match. St. Catherine also strung together an eight-point run to take an 18-7 lead in the first set.
In the second set, the Wildcats started out much the same way, opening with a 6-2 lead. The Pipers closed the set to two points at 13-11, but the Wildcats regained control and took a two-set lead.
A pair of kills from Anita Rojas (Sr., Valle del Cauca, Colombia) helped Hamline take an early lead, 7-4, in the third set. The Pipers never allowed the Wildcats cut the lead to under three in that set, cutting St. Catherine's score in the match to a one-set advantage.
The fourth set was much closer, including five score ties. However, a pair of kills from Tasha Simmons (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) and a trio of St. Catherine attacking errors allowed Hamline to take the set.
In the fifth and final set, the Wildcats jumped out to an 11-4 lead. The Pipers battled back, cutting St. Catherine's lead to three at 14-11, before a kill gave the Wildcats the win.
Rojas and Simmons each had 15 kills for Hamline. Danielle Bennett-Curry (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn.) added 10 kills. Simmons added 23 digs while Heidi Larsen (Jr., Andover, Minn.) led the team with 29.
The Pipers drop to 9-7, 0-4 MIAC. They will compete on Saturday, October 3, in a tournament at UW-Stout. The Pipers will open with a non-conference match against Bethel at 12:00 p.m.
