Power battle at plate goes to Tommies in MIAC first round

Four of St. Thomas' five homeruns were solo shots.

Davidson (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) hit a lead-off single to start the game against the #2 seed Tommies. She stole second and scored the first run of the game as Weinreich reached on a fielder's choice for the RBI.

St. Thomas answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run homerun, taking a 3-1 lead into the second.

Each team hit a solo homerun in the third inning to make the score 4-2 in favor of St. Thomas. Hamline's come on a shot to right field by Weinreich.

The Tommies scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a lead-off homerun. In the top of the fifth, Weinreich got her third RBI of the day as she hit a single up the middle to drive in Davidson for the second time.

Another solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth scored St. Thomas' sixth run as the score became 6-3. St. Thomas then led off the seventh inning with a homerun.

Hamline's final run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh as Davidson hit a lead-off homer.

Davidson was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in the game. Weinreich was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. The pair accounted for five of Hamline's six total hits in the game.

Jessalyn Weaver (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) struck out six batters en route to taking the loss on the rubber for the Pipers.

The Pipers will now play Bethel at 5:00 p.m. at Winona Cotter High School Field in the second game of this double-elimination tournament. Bethel lost at 3:00 p.m. to Gustavus, 5-1.
