Pipers sweep Blue Devils in non-conference play

The visiting Blue Devils slowly built a 5-0 lead on the Pipers in the opener of the double-header, scoring two runs in the first, two in the fourth and another in the fifth. In the sixth, the Pipers had an offensive explosion, giving them all of their runs for the opener.

Sarah Dittberner (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) led off the inning with a double. The next three batters hit singles, one an RBI-single from Brenna Healy (Jr., Mounds View, Minn.).  Heidi Larsen (So., Andover, Minn.) then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and blasted a shot over the fence for a grand slam, and a tie game.

The Pipers added two more runs on an error and a single before the inning was over.

In all, they totaled seven runs on eight hits and the one Blue Devils error in that inning.

Larsen was 2-for-3 in the opener with the four RBI while Erin Farley (So., Saint Paul, Minn.) was also 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Jessalyn Weaver (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) collected the complete-game win, striking out four batters and scattering nine hits.

In the nightcap, after two scoreless innings, Hamline capitalized on two Stout errors by adding three hits to score the only three runs of the game.

Larsen, Dittberner, Grace Weinreich (Sr., Wahkon, Minn.) and Sophie Davidson (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) were all 1-for-2 in the second game.

Kelsey Tacheny (So., Saint Paul, Minn.) earned the complete-game shutout while giving up just three hits and one walk in the seven innings.

The Pipers improve to 17-5, 8-2 MIAC with the non-conference win while the Blue Devils fall to 12-16-, 2-6 WIAC.

The Pipers will hit the road tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14, to play a 4:00 p.m. MIAC double-header at Saint Mary's.
