Pipers pull out sweep of Bethel

In the opening game of the double-header, the Pipers scored a pair of runs early as they put one on the board in the first and another in the second.

Bethel then cut the Pipers' lead in half in the fifth inning, scoring a run on an RBI-ground out.

Hamline extended their lead to four, however, scoring three runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Ashley Anderberg (Jr., Circle Pines, Minn.) hit the first of two 2-RBI singles she would produce over the afternoon in that inning.

The Pipers also proved to be quick on the base paths in game one with four different runners stealing bases.

In getting those two RBI, Anderberg was 2-for-3 at the plate in the game. Jourdan Ulrich (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) was also 2-for-3.

In the second game of the twinbill, it was Bethel who would score first, scoring a run on a wild pitch with no outs in the top of the first. The Pipers would only let them lead for a total of four outs' worth of playing time, however.

With one out in the bottom of the first, the Pipers took back the lead on Anderberg's second 2-RBI single of the day.

The Pipers upped their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a hit and a Royals' error.

Bethel then forced the Pipers to the plate in the bottom of the seventh as they staged a comeback in the top of the frame. The Royals loaded the bases and scored a pair of runs on a dropped ball in right field. The Royals totaled three hits in that half inning to tie the score at 3-3.

For the Pipers, a pair of seniors prevented the game from going into overtime as Ulrich got on base with a two-out bunt and then scored the winning run on a double to deep left center by Grace Weinreich (Wahkon, Minn.).

In game two, Anderberg was 1-for-3 as she had two more RBI to reach four total on the day. A trio of Pipers - Sophie Davidson (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.), Ulrich and Weinreich - all went 2-for-4 in game two.

Jessalyn Weaver (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) was the winning pitcher of record in both games, throwing a four-hit complete-game in the opener and finishing off the top of the seventh in game two.

With the sweep, the Pipers improve to 21-7, 12-4 MIAC. The Royals fall to 17-15, 8-6 MIAC. Hamline will host St. Olaf on Tuesday, April 21, at 4:00 p.m.
