Pipers sweep past Blazers into MIAC playoffs

The Pipers took control of the first game early but had to come from behind in game two to earn the pair of wins.

In the opener, the Blazers hit a trio of singles in the first inning to score the first run, but their lead didn't last long. In the bottom of the inning Erin Farley (So., Saint Paul, Minn.) stepped to the plate with Sophie Davidson (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) on second. Her two-run homerun to left field gave the Pipers a 2-0 lead.

Hamline increased that lead to 3-1 in the second inning on an RBI double to left field from Heidi Larsen (So., Andover, Minn.). Their fourth run came in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Jourdan Ulrich (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.).

Saint Benedict made it a one-run game in the sixth with a pair of runs on three hits. However, Hamline opened the lead back up to three in the same inning, and held on to it for the 6-3 victory.

In the opener Kellie Hoen (Sr., Cologne, Minn.) was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles, including one for an RBI in the sixth inning. She also scored two runs.

Larsen was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Jessalyn Weaver (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) threw a complete game for the Pipers, striking out seven batters while scattering nine hits.

In the second game, the two teams played a quick and scoreless opening two innings before the Blazers scored three runs in the top of the third inning. They used one hit, a double for two RBI, and capitalized on a Piper error in their scoring.

Hamline tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on five hits that included a lead-off double from Farley. The Pipers then took the lead in the fifth on a solo homerun from Ashley Anderberg (Jr., Circle Pines, Minn.).

Davidson then hit the third Piper round-tripper of the day in the bottom of the sixth with Larsen on first, putting her team up 6-3. Saint Benedict also had a solo homerun in the seventh, but that was all the run production they would have left.

Davidson was 3-for-4 in game two with three RBI and a run scored. Anderberg was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Kelsey Tacheny (So., Saint Paul, Minn.) earned the win for the Pipers in game two, throwing a complete game while striking out two batters.

The wins put Hamline in the MIAC tournament, which will be played on May 1 and 2 in Winona, hosted by Saint Mary's.

The Pipers improve to 25-7, 16-4 MIAC while the Blazers fall to 12-18, 8-10 MIAC. Hamline will play a non-conference double-header at UW-River Falls tomorrow, Thursday, April 23, at 4:00 p.m.

They will play their final MIAC regular season double-header on Saturday, April 25, at Macalester. The start time of the game has been moved to 3:00 p.m. due to scheduling conflicts at Macalester.
