The second doubles team of Dan Cromwell (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) and Sam Teitelbaum (Fy., Afton, Minn.) and the third doubles team of Kyle Helgemoe (So., Lakeville, Minn.) and Brendan FitzPatrick (Fy., White Bear Lake, Minn.) both dropped tight 6-8 decisions.
When the Pipers moved to singles, they gained victories at first, second, and sixth singles, while dropping the matches at fourth and fifth in third set super-breakers.
Three first-year players won their debut singles matches for the Pipers. Robert Becker (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) won at first singles in a super-breaker, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8.
Bernard Mitambo (Minneapolis, Minn.) then pulled a comeback in the second set, recovering from a 2-5 deficit, to win 7-5, 7-5 at second singles. Andrew Lutz (Pine City, Minn.) won at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-3.
The Pipers open the season at 0-1, 0-0 MIAC. They will play at St. Thomas to open conference play on Saturday, February 7, at 8:00 a.m. The match will be played at Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
