The Pipers scored the first two goals of the game, starting with Chris Berenguer’s (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) power play goal with 51 seconds remaining in the opening period. Jared Hummel (So., Eagan, Minn.) and Joe Long (Sr., Dayton, Minn.) earned the assists.
Long then tallied an even-strength goal just 16 seconds into the second period to put the hosts up 2-0. St. Thomas then answered back with five straight goals to gain a 5-3 advantage.
The Tommie scoring started at 3:47 in the second, as Andrew Kappers (So., Lakeville, Minn.) scored, unassisted. That was followed up by goals from Alex Coles (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) at 5:26 and Tom Knutson (Sr., Duluth, Minn.) at 6:04.
St. Thomas held the 3-2 lead as they skated into the third period, when Phil Johnson (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) scored at 2:41, followed by Kappers’ second goal of the game at 7:48.
The Pipers cut the lead to 5-3 with a Brian Arrigoni (Fy., Saint Paul, Minn.) power play goal at 17:57 from Kyle Kurr (Jr., Elk River, Minn.). Hamline went with the empty net for the final minute of play, but couldn’t cut any further into the deficit.
Hamline moves to 11-6-1, 6-3-0 MIAC with the loss, while St. Thomas is now 9-7-2,
6-2-1 MIAC. Hamline will travel to St. Thomas to complete the weekend series in a 7:00 p.m. game tomorrow, Saturday, January 31.
