The Pipers scored two power play goals in the opening period, and held onto that 2-0 lead through a scoreless second period. Berenguer tallied the first score at 12:16 from seniors Joe Long (Dayton, Minn.) and Dustin Fulton (Brooklyn Park, Minn.).
Another defenseman, Jared Hummel (Eagan, Minn.) scored the second goal of the opening period at 17:40 from Berenguer and Fulton.
Berenguer added to the Piper lead with another power play goal in the third period, putting the visitors up 3-0 at 2:33. Long and Andrew Birkholz (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Saint John’s then erased the shut-out opportunity at 7:06. The Johnnies pulled their goalie with over a minute to play, but all it did was add to the Pipers’ tally, as Fulton scored an empty-netter at 19:02 from Kelly Plude (Fy., Elk River, Minn.) and Ryan Kupperman (So., Canterbury, N.H.).
The Pipers move to 13-9-1, 8-6-0 MIAC as they pick up two valuable points in the MIAC standings. Hamline will close out the regular season next weekend against Gustavus. They will host the Gusties on Friday, February 20, at 7:15 p.m. on Senior Night.
