Gundy took the 1978-79 team to a third place finish in the NCAA DII Western Division. While at the helm of the Pipers, Gundy attended Hamline law school, graduating in 1979. During that same time, he taught business law, business finance and consumer economics for Hamline’s management and economics department.
He is survived by his wife, Beth, who is a professor in the Hamline School of Business, and his children Ben and Anna.
Twin Cities freelance writer and public address announcer Dave Wright wrote in a tribute to Gundy, "As a teacher and a coach, Bob was always looking for a way to get an answer to a problem. Being out numbered never bothered him very much. Indeed, he fought his cancer much the same way he took on the job as hockey coach at Hamline – he respected his opponent but was determined to beat him."
