Goalie Christian tallies assist as Pipers defeat Blugolds

The two teams skated through a scoreless opening twenty minutes. UW-Eau-Claire out-shot Hamline, 12-5, in the first period, as Beau Christian (So., Moorhead, Minn.) held strong in net for the Pipers.

Hamline’s offense exploded in the first ten minutes of the second period, starting with a goal from Kelly Plude (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) at 2:48. Kirk Olimb (Fy., Warroad, Minn.) and Alex Lundbohm (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) were credited with the assists.

Less than two minutes later the Pipers found themselves on a power play. Chris Berenguer (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) tapped a pass to Brian Arrigoni (So., Saint Paul, Minn.), who blasted a shot on net. The rebound bounced just outside the crease where Kyle Kurr (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) sat waiting to flick in into the side of the net for the score at 4:07.

Danny Vranek (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) then lit the lamp for the third time on the season to put the Pipers up 3-0 during a power play. Berenguer and Plude earned the assists, each recording their seventh of the year.

Hamline’s fourth goal of the game came in the third as Christian earned his first assist as a Piper by bouncing the puck off the boards to Plude at the near blue line. Plude then passed the puck up to Jordan Van Guilder (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.), who took it in the rest of the way for the score at 12:49.

The Blugolds lone goal came as they crashed the net in the final seconds of the game, with Michael McCurtain’s (So., Eagle River, Alaska) bouncing in at 19:57. Nate Smith (Sr., Clayton, Wis.) and Tyler Romansco (So., Perry, Ohio) earned the assists.

The #15-ranked Pipers head into the Thanksgiving break with a 5-1-1, 2-0-0 MIAC record after the non-conference win while the Blugolds are 2-5-2, 0-2-2 NCHA. Hamline next plays on Friday, December 4, when they will travel to St. Olaf for a 7:05 p.m. start.
