Pipers pile up points in win over Oles

The Oles had the initial skater advantage just three minutes after the opening puck drop, but the Pipers held them off until St. Olaf sent a skater to the penalty box with five seconds remaining on their power play.

Hamline took advantage of the 1:55 available of 5-on-4 play, scoring 1:49 after their power play started as Taylor Vichorek (Fy., Moose Lake, Minn.) put the puck in off of a rebound on a Jordan Van Gilder (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) shot. Kelly Plude (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) was credited with the second assist at 6:51.

The goal was the first of four opening period goals that the Pipers scored from right in front of the net.

Alex Contis (Jr., Calabasas, Calif.) scored 33 seconds after Vichorek to put the Pipers up 2-0. Austun Tavis (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Cole Scattarelli (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) were credited with the assists. Hamline remained up 2-0 until 14:04 when Tavis scored a goal of his own off in the midst of the Pipers crashing the net. Scattarelli and Contis earned the assists.

Hamline’s fourth goal came at 17:56 when Kyle Kurr (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) set up just outside the crease and scored his third power play goal of the weekend series against St. Olaf. Brian Arrigoni (So., Saint Paul, Minn.) and Jared Hummel (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) notched the assists.

The Pipers out-shot the Oles 14-4 in the first period.

In the second period, the Pipers killed off a minute of 5-on-3 play. Hamline goalie Beau Christian (So., Moorhead, Minn.) made a strong save during the two-skater Ole advantage and added two more in the remaining 26 seconds of 5-on-4 play.

The Piper power play unit went to work in front of the goal again late in the second period, as Plude scored off of assists from Vichorek and Van Gilder at 18:57.

Hamline hit a hat trick of goal types with a delayed penalty goal at 5:45 in the third from Brett Burgau (Jr., New Ulm, Minn.). Vichorek had his second assist and third point of the night on the score while Bobby Moe (Fy., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had his first assist of the night.

The Oles prevented the shutout by scoring at 17:18 in the third. Matt Cosgriff (Jr., Minnetrista, Minn.) scored the goal on assists from Joel Lundstrom (Fy., Parker, Colo.) and Bryan Osmondson (Sr., Princeton, Minn.)

Christian recorded 17 saves as the Pipers out-shot the Oles 30-18 in the game.

With the conference victory, the #15-ranked Pipers move to 6-1-2, 3-0-1 MIAC and the Oles are 5-3-4, 0-2-4 MIAC. Hamline does not play again until after the holiday break. The Pipers will next host Adrian College, currently ranked #4 in the USCHO.com national rankings, on Friday, January 1st, and Saturday, January 2nd. Puck drop on both nights is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
