The two teams started out exchanging baskets to get to 5-5, but Saint Mary’s pulled ahead early. They carried a 35-27 lead into the locker room at halftime, led by seven points from Lukas Holland (So., La Crosse, Wis.).
The Pipers were led by seven from Carl Hipp (So., Little Canada, Minn.) in the first half.
Saint Mary’s kept their advantage throughout the second half, as the Pipers’ shots didn’t fall their way. The Cardinals led by double-digits for much of the final ten minutes.
The Pipers were led by Stoddard Barnhill’s (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn.) 14 points. Eric Clute (So., Hawley, Minn.) contributed 11, while Tony Thrasher (Sr., Hustisford, Wis.) pulled down 10 boards and scored nine points.
Saint Mary’s was led by 13 points from Bradley Bruno (Fy., Chicago, Ill.) and 18 from Holland.
Hamline’s record now stands at 8-14, 7-11 MIAC after the conference loss. The Cardinals move to 6-16, 5-12 MIAC. Hamline will host Saint John’s at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14. Note that the start time is a correction from an earlier posted time on the Hamline website.
The Pipers will also be celebrating senior night, honoring Tanner Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Brandon Hayes (Bloomington, Minn.), Nick Hutchinson (Atwater, Minn.), and Tony Thrasher (Hustisford, Wis.).
