Hayes has 13 as Pipers fall at Carleton

The Knights took control of the scoreboard early in the first half, but the Pipers closed the lead to one point, 23-22, with five minutes on the clock on a Dan Anderson (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) layup.

Carleton quickly bounced back, pulling out to an 18-point halftime lead (41-23) as they held the Pipers to just one free throw after the Anderson layup.

In the second half, Hamline slowly chipped away at the Carleton lead, closing to two points with 11 minutes left in the game after a trey from Kory Kelzer (Sr., Mayer, Minn.). With less than seven minutes to play, Hamline trailed by just a point (63-62), but the Knights reeled off a 19-4 stretch at the end of the game for the 82-66 victory.

In addition to Hayes’ 13 points, Carl Hipp (So., Little Canada, Minn.) and Kelzer each had 10 points. Hayes and Kelzer led the Pipers off the boards with six rebounds each.

The Pipers fall to 3-6, 2-3 MIAC, while Carleton improves to 7-2, 3-1 MIAC. The Pipers return home to Hutton Arena on Monday, January 5, at 7:30 p.m. to host the Bethel Royals in conference play.
