Pipers fall to Royals in MIAC play

The opening five minutes of play saw the two conference foes exchange one-point leads several times. Bethel began to build on their lead with ten minutes to go in the half, and held a six-point (40-34) lead heading into the locker room.

Brandon Hayes (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) drained a three-pointer just seconds into the final 20 minutes of play to cut the Bethel advantage to three. However, the Royals took charge again, and built their lead to double-digits (53-43) with just under thirteen and a half minutes to play in the game.

A Nick Carroll (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) jumper with eight minutes on the clock cut the lead to four points (61-57), but that was as close as the Royals would allow their hosts to get for the remainder of the game.

Carl Hipp (So., Little Canada, Minn.) led the Pipers with 13 points and five boards (three offensive, two defensive), while Dan Anderson (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Levi Wenrich (Fy., Newhall, Calif.) each tallied 11 points. Stoddard Barnhill (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn.) had 10 points.

Bethel was led by a trio of players who tallied 16 points each -Cory Laugen (Sr., Blaine, Minn.), Tim Madson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) and Chris Vavra (Jr., Cambridge, Minn.). Mike Moberg (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) added 12 points.

Nathan Robertson (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds (two offensive, nine defensive).

With the conference loss, the Pipers fall to 3-7, 2-4 MIAC, while the Royals improve to 9-1, 4-1 MIAC.

The Pipers will next travel to Saint Mary's on Wednesday, January 7, for a 7:30 p.m. conference contest.
