The Pipers started out fast on their home court, as Hipp tallied his first pair of rebounds and baskets of the game in the opening 45 seconds of play. Nick Carroll (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) added a basket at 18:46 for a 6-0 lead.

Hamline pulled out to an eight-point lead five minutes into the game at 13-5 before the Bluejays started to chip away at the lead.

With 5:17 left in the first half, a pair of Elmhurst free throws by Joe Acosta (Jr., Elmhurst, Ill.) tied the game for the first time at 22-22.

The score was tied up for the sixth time of the half as Zack Boyd (So., Decatur, Ill.) hit a jumper with 23 seconds left in the half. The score remained 38-38 when the teams headed into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, Hipp hit a pair of jumpers to regain the lead for Hamline, 42-38, the second coming at 17:13. Those four points were the only ones scored at the start of the second half until Elmhurst's Chris Childs (Sr., Barrington, Ill.) added a pair of points at 16:01.

The game was tied up for the last time at 44-44 with nearly 15 minutes to play in the game. A pair of Boyd free throws gave the Bluejays a 46-44 lead at the 14-minutes mark.

Elmhurst made three of seven 3-point shot attempts in the second half, thwarting Piper attempts to post a comeback. With just over nine minutes to play in the game, four consecutive free throws from Levi Wenrich (So., Newhall, Calif.) sandwiched a Matt Bernier (Jr., Morton, Ill.) allowing only a one-point Piper gain.

Hipp's 24 points and 20 rebounds (10 offensive, 10 defensive) were a game-high. Hipp also added a pair of blocks and three steals. Wenrich had 11 points for the Pipers.

The Bluejays were led by 21 points from Childs and 15 from Boyd, both off the bench. Boyd led Elmhurst in boards with six (three offensive, three defensive).

The Pipers open the season 0-1 overall with the non-conference loss. The Bluejays open at 1-0. Hamline returns home to Hutton Arena on Tuesday, November 17, to host Northwestern in the second game of a women's-men's non-conference double-header. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
