Pipers take tournament title at Cal Lutheran

At the conclusion of the game, Carl Hipp (Jr., Little Canada, Minn.) was named the tournament MVP and Brown was named to the all-tournament team.

The Pipers opened with a three-pointer from Nick Carroll (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) and were dominant from there over the tournament hosts. Cal Lutheran twice held brief one-point leads around the 15-minute mark of the first half, but the Pipers led for the remaining 39+ minutes of play in the game.

A jumper by Noah Aguirre (Fy., Fillmore, Calif.) at the end of the first half gave the visitors a 14-point, 42-28, lead at halftime.

Cal Lutheran cut Hamline's lead to eight points, 47-39, with 13:09 to play, but a trey from Jordan Schmidt (Fy., Northbrook, Ill.) put the Pipers back up by 11. Hamline cruised to the tournament title after that.

Brown had a game-high 17 points and recorded a double-double by adding 11 rebounds. He also contributed three blocked shots. Hipp and Schmidt had 10 points apiece.

En route to the tournament title game, the Pipers upset D3hoops.com #8-ranked Wheaton, 69-68, and Cal Lutheran defeated Monmouth, 72-58.

The non-conference win brings the Pipers' overall record to 5-4 while Cal Lutheran drops to 5-5 overall. Hamline will take a 1-3 MIAC record into their return to conference play on Saturday, January 2. They will host Carleton College at 3:00 p.m.
