Pipers head outside to topple Calvin

The Knights, who return their entire pitching staff from a 32-10 team that won the 2008 MIAA conference championship, couldn't keep the Piper from scoring in Arizona.

Tres Humerickhouse (So., Farmington, Minn.) helped lead the charge against the Knights, going 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Catcher Lincoln Hughes (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) went 3-for-3, also with a run scored and an RBI.

Matt Mullendore (So., Amery, Wis.) threw eight innings, striking out eight batters and spread out six hits while surrendering just one walk and two unearned runs.

After a scoreless first inning, Hamline scored their first run in the bottom of the second. Andy Powell (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) drew a two-out walk and then moved to second as Dan Kaczrowski (Sr., St. Anthony, Minn.) hit a single to center field. Hughes drew the second walk of the inning, and then all three runners advanced on a balk, scoring Powell.

The Knights tied the game in the top of the third, but the Pipers jumped out to 4-1 lead on three hits and a hit batter. Andy King (Fy., Ft. Myers, Fla.) and Powell each had an RBI.

The Pipers repeated that scoring performance in the bottom of the fourth, adding three more runs on three hits and a wild pitch in the next half inning. Alex Buresh (Jr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.), Tony Rogers (So., St. Michael, Minn.) and J.D. Modrynski (So., Lakeville, Minn.) had an RBI apiece in giving the Pipers a 7-1 lead.

Hamline then added a run in the fifth and again in the sixth before putting four on the board in the eighth. The four-run eighth inning came on three hits and one Calvin error, with Ryan Preese (So., Champlin, Minn.) posting two RBI and Kaczrowski and Humerickhouse adding one each.

Calvin added two runs in the ninth as the Pipers earned the 13-4 victory.

With the win, the Pipers improve to 5-2, 0-0 MIAC. Calvin falls to 0-3 on the season.

Hamline will return to the field in Phoenix on Saturday, March 21, to play Luther College.
