Punyko places 6th in 200 IM on first day of MIAC championships

Punyko swam a 2:12.38 en route to finishing sixth in the 200 IM.

In the Thursday night "B" finals of the 50 freestyle, Marreya Bailey (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) finished 16th overall with a swim of 25.65.

The Piper 400 medley relay team finished off the night with an eighth place finish in 4:15.04. The team consisted of Sam Fisher (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.), Bailey, Punyko, and Tiffany Thanel (Fy., Moorhead, Minn.).

Earlier in the day, during the preliminary sessions, Punyko's swim of 2:11.53 moved her from sixth to second on the all-time list. The current school record of 2:11.46 was set in 1980 by Carrie Hefte.

Kryslyn Kalkbrenner (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) swam a 2:29.57 in the 200 IM to finish 39th overall.

Bailey swam a 25.04 50-freestyle race in the preliminaries, qualifying for the "B" finals tonight.

Thanel swam to the finish in the 50 free in 26.27, finishing 32nd in the morning heats, while Erinn Moriarity's (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) 26.62 was 36th overall.

The conference championship meet will continue tomorrow, Friday, February 19. The morning session begins at 10:30 a.m. while the evening finals session will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota.
