Hamline began the match with intensity and sent many balls towards the Northwestern box. The Piper offense created many early scoring opportunities, including a shot from first-year Alyssa Koulentis (Gresham, Ore.) at 11:50 that was knocked just over the crossbar by the Northwestern goalie.
The Eagles answered the attack with a goal from junior Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn.). Kirby managed to get the ball past Hamline first-year goalkeeper Molly Jacobs (Portland, Ore.) at 13:07.
The first half ended with more action around the Eagle net, with Hamline totaling nine shots to Northwestern's one.
Hamline started the second half with an unassisted goal from Jenna Albert (Fy., Toddville, Iowa) at 54:31. Albert sent the ball over Northwestern's keeper, junior Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn.) into the upper left corner of the goal.
The second half continued with back and forth play, but at the end of the second half, neither team could put the ball into the net, forcing overtime.
Overtime came to an end at 96:24 with a game-winning goal from Koulentis, who put the ball in the net off of a cross from Garside.
Hamline out-shot the Eagles 15-5 in the match and had five corner kicks to Northwestern's zero.
Jacobs had to make just one save in earning the win in goal while Hanson made five saves for Northwestern.
The 2-1 non-conference victory puts Hamline at 5-10-0 overall while the Eagles are now 7-7-0. The Pipers will head to Augsburg on Friday, October 22, to play a 7:00 p.m. MIAC contest.
