The host Cardinals took an early lead, jumping ahead by 11 points, 18-7, nine minutes into the game.
Down by 12 points at 25-13 with 7:30 remaining in the first half, the Pipers went on a 13-6 run over the next three minutes to cut their deficit to five points. Rochelle Sather (Sr., Andover, Minn.) drained the three-pointer at 4:24 that made it a 31-26 game in favor of the Cardinals.
The Pipers ultimately trailed by eight at the intermission, 40-32. Mary Wilkowski (Jr., Savannah, Ga.) had 11 points and six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes to lead the visitors.
Saint Mary’s carried and maintained their lead into the second half. Hamline cut the Cardinal lead to two points with 2:03 and 1:26 remaining. However, a series of free throws in the final minute gave the host team the eight-point margin of victory, 77-69.
Wilkowski had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pipers. Nikki Klinck (Jr., Hibbing, Minn.) added nine and Sather had eight.
Hamline is now 5-5, 3-4 MIAC with the conference loss. The Cardinals are 3-7, 2-5 MIAC. Hamline remains on the road to play at Gustavus on Saturday, January 9, at 1:00 p.m. The game is the first in a women’s-men’s road double-header.
