Wildcats take momentum early for win over Pipers

The Pipers started out quickly as Mary Wilkowski (Jr., Savannah, Ga.) and Kara Poirier (Fy., Eau Claire, Wis.) put up a pair of lay-ups to open the game's scoring.

With the score tied 8-8 at 15:22, Nikki Klinck (Jr., Hibbing, Minn.) made her second of two free throws to put the Pipers up 9-8. Amy Battey from St. Catherine drained a jumper about 20 seconds later to give the Wildcats a 10-9 lead and to start a 12-point run.

That run gave the hosts a 20-9 lead at the midway point of the half.

The Pipers then went on a streak of their own, running off six straight points to cut their deficit to four, 20-16, at 6:42. They cut the Wildcat lead to three, 22-19, at 4:58, but ultimately trailed by six at halftime, 44-38.

St. Catherine took control of the scoreboard in the beginning of the second half, as well. Hamline closed the gap to three points as late as 12:22 (57-54), but the Wildcats didn't allow them any closer.

Wilkowski finished with 20 points while Tromesa May (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had 19 points and nine rebounds. Klinck had 14 points as the third Piper in double-digits.

The Pipers fall to 12-11, 10-10 MIAC while the Wildcats improve to 11-12, 10-10 MIAC. Hamline returns home to Hutton Arena to host Saint Benedict on Wednesday, February 17, at 7:30 p.m.
