The Pipers got off to a quick start, opening with a pair of three-pointers from Englund (So., St. Francis, Minn.) and Kelly (Jr., Blaine, Minn.). They then built a 10-point lead, 12-2, in the first five minutes of play.
Hamline shot just over 45 percent from the field in the first half compared to the Wildcats’ 28 percent as the Pipers led by 18, 36-18, heading into the locker room.
Kelly tallied 11 points in the opening 20 minutes while Kara Poirier (Fy., Eau Claire, Wis.) had eight points. Englund pulled down six boards to start the game. St. Catherine was led by eight points from Laura Kalbfell (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.).
A trey from Kelly also started off the second half, and with a lay-up by Mary Wilkowski (Jr., Savannah, Ga.), the Pipers led 41-18 in the opening minute of the second half.
At the midway point of the half, Hamline led by 22, 52-30. They went on to win by 21, 67-46.
Englund tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, while Kelly finished with 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Poirier tallied 10 points and five boards, and Wilkowski added with eight points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots.
After the conference win, the Pipers are now 6-7, 4-6 MIAC and the Wildcats drop to 6-7, 5-5 MIAC. Hamline will play at St. Thomas on Monday, January 18, at 5:45 p.m. The game will be the first in a women’s-men’s double-header. Both games will be played at Macalester due to construction on the St. Thomas campus.
