61 seconds into the game, Poirier hit a jumper to score the first points of the game. The Eagles hit a pair of free throws to tie it at 2-2, and then did the same thing to tie the game after a Mary Wilkowski (Sr., Savannah, Ga.) jumper gave the Pipers a 4-2 lead.
Those eight points for the 4-4 tie were the only points scored in the opening give minutes of play. At the 15-minute mark, Wilkowski hit a layup followed by a jumper a minute later and the Pipers would go on to lead until the final buzzer.
The Pipers built up a lead as large as ten points, 17-7, in the first half as Stephanie Robinson (Jr., Sioux City, Iowa) snagged a steal and took it in for two points with six and a half minutes to play in the half.
The Pipers led by four at the break, 21-17, as Wilkowski led with seven points. Brianna Blackhawk (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn.) had five rebounds to lead the Pipers off the board in the first half.
Hamline opened the second half with a 10-2 run for a 31-19 lead in the first five minutes. Poirier had a pair of three-pointers while Nikki Klink (Sr., Hibbing, Minn.) had a pair of short shots to account for the scoring.
The Eagles were able to cut the deficit to single digits a few times, but never closed the gap to less than six points.
Wilkowski led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds while Poirier finished with 11 points. Je'Naya Brown (Fy., Lewisville, Texas) added seven rebounds.
The Eagles had a pair of players with double-doubles, led by Megan Myhre's 16 points and 14 rebounds. Allison Johnson had 13 points and 10 boards.
Hamline opens the season at 1-0, 0-0 MIAC while Northwestern is 0-1, 0-0 UMAC after the non-conference contest. The Pipers will remain on the road to play UW-Stevens Point on Thursday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m.
