Pipers split on second day of St. Olaf tournament

The Knights won the opening match of the evening by set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19.

Hamline opened the match with a 6-1 lead as Martin Luther tallied five errors. Also in that stretch, Baker had the first of her team-high 11 kills.

Down 7-2, the Knights then took nine of the next ten points for an 11-8 lead. They would control the scoreboard for the rest of the set.

The Pipers twice held four-point advantages in the second set (5-1, 10-6), but Martin Luther tied the set at 11-11. A 13-11 Piper lead was erased by the Knights, and they never trailed again in the set.

The third set quickly went in the Pipers' favor as they jumped out to an 11-1 lead. The Knights attempted a comeback, taking five points in a row to cut Hamline's lead to 11-6, but the Pipers ended the run and stayed in control to force a fourth set.

In the fourth set, Hamline took a 14-6 advantage, however, Martin Luther scored 19 out of the next 24 points to win the set and the match.

Baker's 11 kills led the Pipers. Alex Anderson (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) added eight kills. Heidi Larsen's (Sr., Andover, Minn.) 22 digs led the Piper defense. Larsen also added three service aces.

Hamline then went on to sweep Presentation to close out the tournament, winning by set scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-14.

The Pipers won the first three points of the match and never allowed Presentation to score more than one point at a time in the opening set.

Hamline had an even stronger opening in the second set, pulling out to a 7-0 lead. Presentation pulled to within five at 18-13, but couldn't close the gap on the scoreboard any more than that. The Pipers would go on to dominate in similar fashion in the third set.

Baker had 13 kills in the second match of the night for a total of 24 kills over the course of the evening. Larsen added 15 digs to her day's total. Sammy Redman (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) had 30 assists and three service aces.

The Pipers are now 2-2 overall following the non-conference contests. Hamline will host Northwestern on Wednesday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m.
