Larsen sets school record as Pipers split

Larsen was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the matches. She had 41 digs in the match against the Wildcats to set the new school record.

In the opening match of the day for Hamline, Saint Benedict posted a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24) victory.

The Pipers nearly forced the match to a fourth set when they tied the match at 23-23, and then again at 24-24. After trailing 23-17, the Pipers won the next six points for the tie on the scoreboard. They tied it again at 24-24, but a Blazer kill and a Piper ball handling error ended the match.

The Pipers were led by Shannon Schmidt's (Jr., Bismark, N.D.) six kills against Saint Benedict.

Hamline then won their final match of the weekend to earn a 2-2 record in the tournament. They defeated St. Catherine by set scores of 17-25,28-26, 25-19, 25-27, 15-11.

The Pipers bounced back after losing the opening set to win an evenly-matched second set. They then jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the third set as Aisha Baker (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) had a trio of kills in a nine-point run early in the set.

That cushion was all the Pipers needed as they took a 2-1 set lead.

In the fourth set, the Pipers found themselves trailing 24-20 before four straight Wildcat errors tied it at 24-24. The teams tied the set at 25-25, too, before a pair of Piper errors led to St. Catherine tying the match at 2-2.

In the fifth, and final, set St. Catherine earned a 3-1 lead to start it off. Down 4-3, the Pipers then took the next three points for their first lead of the set.

There were five more ties in the set before Hamline took the lead at 11-10 on a Wildcat error. They would win four out of the next five points, including three kills from Sam Greeney-Hamlin (Fy., St. Cloud, Minn.) to win the match.

In addition to Larsen's school-record 41 digs, Greeney-Hamlin had 17 kills in the match. Anna Murie (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) added 13 and Baker had 12 kills.

The Pipers are now 7-7, 0-1 MIAC after the non-conference split. Hamline returns to MIAC play on Wednesday, September 22, hosting Augsburg at 7:00 p.m.
