Pipers defeat Cougars, fall to #16 Oles

The Pipers began the afternoon with the 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18) win over the Cougars.

The two teams opened the match with an even first 22 points until Shannon Schmidt (Jr., Bismark, N.D.) ended the tie with a kill. That started a seven-point run for the Pipers, earning them an 18-11 lead.

The Cougars would pull to within two at 20-18, but the Pipers then put the set away.

Morris took the early lead in the second set, going up 6-2 and then 8-3. Hamline started to eat away at the deficit a few points at a time until going ahead 13-11 on a pair of Cougar attack errors.

The teams traded points in groups of two and three for the rest of the set, putting a tied score on the board five different times. Molly Schroeder (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) had a kill to put Hamline up 18-17, ending the last tied score of the set.

After an early 5-1 lead, the Pipers found themselves behind on the scoreboard in the third set for the first time at 16-15. The Cougar lead came in a 7-to-1 run for Morris that ultimately gave them a 21-16 lead that they protected for the rest of the set.

In the third set, Hamline led from the beginning, winning the first three points and never looking back. The Cougars did attempt a comeback while down 24-15, but could only string together three points in delaying Hamline's match win.

Sam Greeney-Hamline (Fy., St. Cloud, Minn.) had a match-high 14 kills while Anna Murie (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) had 12 kills. Heidi Larsen (Sr., Andover, Minn.) tallied 25 digs.

In their second match of the day, the #16-ranked Oles took the 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) non-conference win. The Oles took early leads in each set with the exception of the Pipers taking a 2-1 lead to start the second frame.

Greeney-Hamlin and Aisha Baker (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) each had six kills in the match. Larsen had 11 digs.

The Pipers are now 6-6, 0-1 MIAC with the non-conference split. They will stay in St. Joseph to play the host Blazers at 11:00 a.m. before playing St. Catherine at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be non-conference contests.
