The Gusties took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a lead-off solo
homerun over the left field fence by Jenna Johnson (Sr., Shoreview,
Minn.), and the score stayed there until the fifth.
In the fifth, Gustavus put two runs on the board on three hits,
including an RBI single by Jenny Ewert (Jr., St. James, Minn.) and an
RBI double from Emily Wendorff (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.).
The Pipers then started to rally in the bottom of the sixth, cutting
their deficit to one run as two players crossed the plate on two hits
and a Gustie error.
Kristi Gravem (So., Maplewood, Minn.) hit a lead-off single and then
scored from first on a sharply-hit double down the left field line by
Erin Farley (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.). Cortney Bailey (Jr., Blooming
Prairie, Minn.) pinch ran for Farley and advanced to third on a wild
pitch during a swinging strikeout.
Bailey then scored as Brenna Healy (Jr., Mounds View, Minn.) reached
first on a throwing error by the Gustavus starter, Betsie Collins (Sr.,
Waseca, Minn.).
Gustavus then took a three-run lead back in the top of the final inning, scoring twice on three hits and a Piper error.
Jessalyn Weaver (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) took the loss for the Pipers,
dropping to 7-4, while Collins was the winning pitcher, now with a
record of 6-3. Both pitchers threw complete games.
Gravem was 2-for-4 at the plate while Heidi Larsen (Jr., Andover,
Minn.) was 2-for-3. Johnson was 1-for-4 at the plate for Gustavus with
the two RBI.
Game 2: Box score

HU 1 5 3
In game two, the Gusties tallied two runs in the opening inning and then another in the fourth for all of their scoring.
The Pipers put their rally attempt together in the seventh inning,
this time, as Ashley Anderberg (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn.) led off with a
single. Bailey came in to pinch run and advanced to second on an
illegal pitch with Larsen at the plate. The pitch came on a 2-2 count as
Larsen was swinging at strike three and extended her at-bat.
She took advantage of the extra pitch, hitting a single through the
right side that moved Bailey to third. Bailey then scored on a ground
out by Laura Randall (Fy., Fridley, Minn.).
That run was all the Pipers could muster, however, as they lost the game, 3-1.
Once again, both pitchers threw complete games for their respective
teams. Kelsey Tacheny (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) took the loss on the
rubber for the Pipers, dropping to 2-2. Gustavus’ winning pitcher in
game two was Callie Nelsen (Sr., Willmar, Minn.), who is now 6-1.
Five different Pipers had one hit apiece while Gustavus was led by a
2-for-4 showing at the plate by Lisa Klass (So., Richfield, Minn.), who
had an RBI.
Hamline drops to 10-8, 4-2 MIAC with the pair of conference losses
while the Gusties are now 14-6, 7-1 MIAC. The Pipers will play a pair of
non-conference games against UW-River Falls on Tuesday, April 13, at
home. The first game of the double-header is scheduled to begin at 4:00
p.m.
