Anderberg homers but Pipers drop two to Auggies

The host Auggies capitalized on a Piper error on the lead-off batter, followed by two hits, in the first to score the opening run of the game. They then added a second run in the next inning on a pair of hits.

Hamline made it a one-run game in the top of the fifth when Bethany Hine (Fy., Carver, Minn.) hit an RBI-single that scored Jackie Brigl (Fy., Roseville, Minn.). Kelsey Tacheny (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) also had a double in that inning.

However, Augsburg scored what would ultimately be the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth.

Ashley Anderberg (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn.) lofted a one-out, pinch-hit, solo homer in the bottom of the seventh in an attempt to ignite a Piper rally, but that was as close as Hamline could get in game one.

Five different Pipers scattered the five hits in the opening game while Jessalyn Weaver (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) tossed a complete game with four strikeouts, but took the loss for Hamline.

Hamline rebounded quickly in the beginning of the second game to score a pair of runs in the opening inning. Tacheny, who took over the pitching duties for Hamline, drew a lead-off walk and advanced on a fielder’s choice that put Hine on first. The duo advanced a base on a wild pitch.

Anderberg then singled to right field to score Tacheny and Hine scored off of the same sequence of events on a fielding error by the Augsburg right fielder.

The Auggies quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an RBI-double and a passed ball. They then used a hit and an error in the second inning to take their first lead of the game in the second, 3-2.

Hamline didn’t let that lead last long, however, as Laura Dombrovski (Fy., Maple Lake, Minn.) doubled in a pair of runs in the third for a 4-3 Piper lead. Anderberg had hit a lead-off double herself while Laura Randall (Fy., Fridley, Minn.) had a single and then stole second to get into scoring position for Dombrovski’s hit.

That would be all the Pipers could manage however, and the Auggies used a three-RBI double in the fourth along with a walk with the bases loaded in the sixth to win the game, 7-4.

Randall and Kara Poirier (Fy., Eau Claire, Wis.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate while Anderberg was 2-for-4 with the RBI. Tacheny took the loss for the Pipers.

Hamline drops to 12-16, 6-8 MIAC with the losses while the Auggies are now 21-15, 11-7 MIAC. The Pipers now travel to Carleton on Saturday, April 24, for a 1:00 p.m. double-header.
