Hamline opened the match by taking a 2-1 lead after doubles, led by a
super-break win at first doubles by David Croonquist (Fy., North Oaks,
Minn.) and Robert Becker (So., Minnetonka, Minn.), 9-8 (10-5).
Then at second doubles, Bernard Mitambo (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Kyle Helgemoe (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) edged out the competition for a
9-7 win.
Croonquist, Mitambo, and Helgemoe then went on to victory in singles to give Hamline the 5-4 team win.
Croonquist battled back at first singles after dropping the opening
set to win in a third set tie-breaker, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). Mitambo won
at third singles, 7-5, 6-3, while Helgemoe won his fourth singles match,
6-1, 6-4.
Hamline improves to 5-4, 0-4 MIAC with the non-conference win, while
Cornell is now 5-11, 2-1 IIAC. The Pipers will remain in Orlando to play
UW-Eau Claire on Monday, March 29.
