The game started under mostly cloudy skies, but the sun dominated the
horizon for the final 45 minutes of play as the two teams faced off in a
non-conference match.
The Pipers scored the first goal early in the game. Stephen Johnson
(Fy., Apple Valley, Minn.) earned an assist as he took a hard shot in
the box and Javier Rios (Sr., Chihuahua, Mexico) knocked in the rebound
at 2:48.
The Storm knotted up the score less than four minutes later on a play
off of a corner kick. Mark Lahart (So., Newton, Iowa) lofted the corner
kick into the box and Jeremy Reinert (So., Indianola, Iowa) headed the
ball backwards into the net at 6:03.
The score remained even at one apiece until the 70th minute of play.
In the midst of eight second-half corner kicks for the Pipers, one by
Ibou Wone (Jr., Dakar, Senegal) just seconds after subbing into the game
bounced around in the box. Johnson slid it to Studer who, while facing
his own keeper on the opposite end of the field, knocked it in backwards
with his heel for the game-winner at 70:49.
Hamline out-shot the Storm 17-7 and had 11 corner kicks to four from the Storm.
Zach Nelson (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) had four saves in net for the Pipers.
Hamline is now 5-4-0, 1-2-0 MIAC with the non-conference win while
the Storm are 3-6-0, 0-1-0 IIAC. The Pipers will return to Pat Paterson
Field to host St. Thomas in their homecoming game on Saturday, October
2, at 11:00 a.m.
