As play opened on the first period, Spencer Anderson (Jr., Chicago,
Ill.) was fed a pass by Kelly Plude (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) as worked
his way into the offensive zone. Anderson passed the puck out to Vranek
(Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) on the side as he set himself up in front
of the net. Vranek centered the puck back to Anderson, who tapped it in
for the 1-0 lead just 42 seconds after the opening puck drop.
The score remained 1-0 until 37 seconds after the opening puck drop
of the second period. Talon Berlando (Jr., Drumheller, Alberta) evened
the score with a goal for the Yellowjackets.
Hamline then scored three goals to go ahead 4-1 after two periods of
play. Vranek added a power play goal to his tally at 3:05. Jordan Van
Gilder (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Chris Berenguer (Jr., Eden Prairie,
Minn.) earned the assists as the Pipers set up the goal with a series of
passes around the perimeter, ending with Vranek’s shot.
Brian Arrigoni (So., Saint Paul, Minn.) then lit the lamp for the
first time this season as he added a power play tally at 10:35. Ryan
Kupperman (Jr., Canterbury, N.H.) and Berenguer were credited with the
assists.
Vranek scored his second goal of the game as Kelly Plude (Jr., Elk
River, Minn.) quickly passed him the puck right in front of the crease
and he tipped it in as the Pipers crashed the net. Jay Fifield (Jr.,
Eden Prairie, Minn.) earned the second assist on the goal.
The Yellowjackets tallied three even-strength goals in the third
period, however, to send the game to a 4-4 deadlock that couldn’t be
broken in overtime. Thomas Erlacher (Fy., Brunico, Italy), Chris Wilson
(Sr., Prince Albert, Saskatchewan), and Berlando scored goals at 5:47,
7:34, and 13:16, respectively.
Hamline is now 8-2-3 overall with
the non-conference tie, and the Yellowjackets move to 8-5-2 overall.
The Pipers return to MIAC play this weekend, hosting Bethel on Friday,
January 15, at 7:15 p.m.
