The Pipers opened with a pair of goals from just outside the crease
in the first ten minutes, starting with a score by Alex Lundbohm (Jr.,
Roseau, Minn.) at 7:25. Bobby Moe (Fy., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Brett
Burgau (Jr., New Ulm, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Two minutes later Brian Arrigoni (So., Saint Paul, Minn.) and Kyle
Kurr (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) passed the puck up to Ryan Kupperman (Jr.,
Canterbury, N.H.) in the slot, who faked left and went right for the
score at 9:28.
The Johnnies then responded with three goals in the second half of
the period at 11:16, 13:34, and then a power play goal just seconds
before the end of the Piper penalty at 16:13.
The Pipers got the puck quickly after the ensuing face-off and Jordan
Van Gilder (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) skated it into the zone and
narrowly missed tying the game with a shot off the post. The Johnnies
went on to carry the 3-2 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The teams exchanged goals in the second period, with Saint John’s scoring the first goal at 8:84 on a power play.
Moe's first collegiate tally then made it a one-goal game at 11:48,
scoring as the Johnnies attempted to clear the puck behind their own net
and it deflected off the boards into the left circle. Moe stepped up
and slapped it in for the unassisted goal.
Kurr tied the game up at 10:43 in the third after the Pipers moved
the puck around in the Johnnies’ zone for nearly two minutes. They
allowed few brief chances of neutral zone play for Saint John’s to
execute a line change. Arrigoni and Kupperman had the assists on the
score.
Hamline’s game-winner came with just over a minute remaining in the
game as Arrigoni scored on a power play from Kurr and Chris Berenguer
(Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) at 18:54.
The Pipers improve to 13-4-3, 8-2-1 MIAC while the Johnnies fall to
6-10-4, 2-7-2 MIAC. The same two teams will meet again Saturday,
February 6, at 7:15 p.m. on Hamline’s home ice at Drake Arena.
