All five goals scored in the game were even-strength and the Hamline
special teams unit killed off eight Ole power plays in the game.
The Pipers wasted little time in getting on the board after the
opening puck drop. Alex Lundbohm (Sr., Roseau, Minn.) won the faceoff
for the Pipers and after Hamline momentarily dropped back into their
defensive zone, they attacked immediately.
Lundbohm set up to the left of the St. Olaf goal and Brett Burgau
(Sr., New Ulm, Minn.) and Chris Berenguer (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.)
worked the puck over to him, earning the assists on his goal just 23
seconds into the game.
Hamline then took a 2-0 lead just 1:53 into the second period on
Austun Tavis' (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) second goal of the Showcase.
Kyle Mattson (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Zach Johnson (Fy., Mound,
Minn.) earned the assists.
The Olaf scored a pair of goals at 4:59 and 7:08 to even the score after two periods.
The Pipers struck with their third goal at 4:50 in the final period.
Dominic Chiappelli (So., Detroit, Mich.) dumped the puck back to
Berenguer on the blue line near the boards. Berenguer hit a hard sliding
shot to the lower left corner of the goal for the game-winner.
The teams each had 25 shots in the game. Matt Hemingway (Fy.,
Alexandria, Minn.) made 23 saves to move to 2-0 in net for the Pipers.
Hamline is now 2-0-0 overall with the non-conference win, the Oles
are 1-1-0. The Pipers will host their first game of the season on
Friday, November 5, as St. Norbert comes to town. The game will be at
7:00 p.m. at Drake Arena.
