All of the goals scored in the game were even-strength tallies.
Saint Mary's scored the lone goal of the opening period, as Chase
Marshall put the puck in the net at 14:01 off of Austin Balko and Kevin
Wentland.
That was not a sign of things to come, as the second period saw five
goals scored - including all four Piper tallies - and seven penalties
handed out.
Jordan Van Gilder (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) tied up the game at 4:11
in the period on an assist from Cory Belisle (Fy., Andover, Minn.).
The score remained tied for about eight minutes before Vranek lit the
lamp twice in 64 seconds, scoring at 12:20 and 13:24. Ryan Kupperman
(Sr., Canterbury, N.H.) and Jay Fifield (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had
the assists on the first goal while Van Gilder and Kupperman had the
assists on the second.
Kevin Wentland of Saint Mary's answered at 17:09 in the second on a
score assisted by Marshall and Balko. But Austun Tavis (Sr., Grand
Rapids, Minn.) scored what would be the game-winner at 18:09 from Brett
Burgau (Sr., New Ulm, Minn.) and Tim Olson (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.)
The Cardinals added a third goal to their side of the scoreboard at
2:44 in the third as Balko scored from Nate Peterson and Marshall, but
it wasn't enough to overcome the Pipers' strong second period.
Hamline out-shot Saint Mary's 35-30 in the game.
The Pipers move to 4-1-0, 1-0-0 MIAC after playing their first
conference game of the year while the Cardinals are 3-4-0, 2-1-0 MIAC.
These same two teams will meet tomorrow, Saturday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m. as Hamline hosts Saint Mary's at the Warner Coliseum. This will be the men's 2010-11 debut at their new home rink.
