The Piper power play unit took advantage of the first opportunity
they were afforded in the game, scoring at 14:49 in the first period as
Austun Tavis (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) put the puck in from the
goal-side of the right circle. Chris Berenguer (Sr., Eden Prairie,
Minn.) and Kyle Mattson (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) were credited with the
assists on the score.
Early in the second period, the Pipers killed off 1:46 of a 5-on-3
Saint John's advantage, and 16 seconds later doubled their goal score.
Brian Arrigoni (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) scored from the goal-side of the
left circle at 5:50. Brett Burgau (Sr., New Ulm, Minn.) and Grand
Faunhorst (Fy., Plymouth, Minn.) earned the assists.
Hamline's third and final goal came at 11:12 in the second as Jay
Fifield (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Alex Lundbohm (Sr., Roseau,
Minn.) pushed the puck up to Ryan Kupperman (Sr., Canterbury, N.H.) at
the blue line. Kupperman then broke away from the Saint John's defender
and took the puck in all alone.
Saint John's out-shot Hamline 27-22 in the game, but first-year
goaltender Matt Hemingway (Alexandria, Minn.) was flawless in net while
recording the shutout in his first collegiate start.
The Pipers open the season with a 1-0-0 overall record after the
non-conference win. The Johnnies are 0-1-0. Hamline will play their
second game in the MIAC Showcase on Sunday, October 31, at 4:00 p.m.
against St. Olaf. The game will be played at the Fogerty Arena in
Blaine.
