The Pipers scored three goals, each five minutes apart, and in nearly
every way possible in the first period. They began with an
even-strength goal, followed that up with a power play tally, and ended
with a short-handed score.
Cory Belisle (Fy., Andover, Minn.) opened the scoring with a
back-handed flip into the net from four feet out at 5:11. His goal was
unassisted.
Just over five minutes later, Chris Berenguer (Sr., Eden Prairie,
Minn.) put the Pipers up by two, scoring from the point on the power
play at 10:56. Ryan Kupperman (Sr., Canterbury, N.H.) and Danny Vranek
(Sr., New Port Richie, Minn.) had the assists.
The third goal of the period came at 15:43 as Kirk Olimb (So.,
Warroad, Minn.) captured the puck with the Pipers on the penalty kill.
He passed it up to Austun Tavis (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) in the
neutral zone, who took it in the rest of the way, knocking the puck in
top shelf at 15:43 for the short-handed goal.
That goal was ultimately the game-winner.
The Auggies ended the shutout at 6:13 in the second period as Brandon
Bukowski (Jr., Superior, Wis.) scored an even-strength goal. Nick Guran
(Jr., McHenry, Ill.) and Joel Sauer (Sr., Madison, Wis.) were credited
with the assists.
That goal was the only score of the second period as the teams headed into the second intermission with a 3-1 Hamline lead.
The Auggies made it a one-goal game at 6:14 in the third with a goal
from John Lennartson (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.). Guran had the assist.
Hamline quickly widened the Piper lead to two goals again, however,
as Brian Arrigoni (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) put the puck in at 7:08 from
the slot. Joel Scattarelli (Fy., Elk River, Minn.) and Kupperman had the
assists.
Kupperman put the fourth type of goal up on the board with 51
seconds remaining in the game, scoring the empty netter for the 5-2
victory. Alex Lundbohm (Sr., Roseau, Minn.) and Arrigoni were credited
with the assists.
Hamline out-shot Augsburg by one shot, 33-to-32, in the game.
The Pipers are now 12-3-3, 7-0-2 MIAC while the Auggies are 8-8-2,
2-6-1 MIAC. Hamline will travel to Augsburg to play the second game of
the series tomorrow, Saturday, January 29, at 7:00 p.m.
