Hipp hits 1,000 career point milestone as Pipers defeat Gusties

Hipp (Little Canada, Minn.) entered the game needing 25 points for the milestone. His 1,000th career point came on a free throw late in the second half. He also pulled down 12 rebounds in the game to record a double-double.

The Gusties started off with the first four points of the game in the opening minute.  Ray Brown (Sr., Saint Paul, Minn.) gave the Pipers their first lead of the game, 7-6, at 15:06 with a shot from outside the arc.

The lead stood until Gustavus' Tyler Grey (So., Montevideo, Minn.) hit a three-pointer for the 9-7 lead a minute later.

Gustavus carried a lead until halftime with their largest lead coming by seven, 26-19, with five minutes to play before the intermission. They led by just one at the end of the first 20 minutes, 30-29.

Jordan Schmidt (Fy., Northbrook, Ill.) gave the Pipers their first lead of the second half, 35-34, with a short basket at 17:05. Hipp and Brown then combined to add five points to Hamline's tally in the next minute to put the hosts up 40-34 at 16:05.

The Gusties closed to within one again, 40-39, at 14:49, and the score stayed within three points for the next five minutes of play.

With less than 10 minutes to play the Pipers started expanding their scoreboard advantage to five points as the teams alternated baskets.

Gustavus came back, and started to alternate ties with the Pipers, with the final tie of the game coming at 60-60 with 2:22 to play. 11 seconds later, and with 998 career points, Hipp was sent to the free throw line. He drained both shots for a 62-60 lead, and the milestone. 30 seconds later he made a lay-up and another free throw for the 65-60 lead, and the Pipers stayed ahead until the final buzzer.

Brown tallied 20 points in the win and had four blocked shots. Hipp added a pair of blocks.

Gustavus was led by 12 from Phil Wirjes (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) and 11 from James Hill (Fy., Edina, Minn.).

The win was also the eighth straight win for the Pipers at Hutton Arena this season.

The victory moves the Pipers to 15-7, 11-6 MIAC on the season while the Gusties are now 13-7, 11-5 MIAC. Hamline will hit the road to play at Saint Mary's on Wednesday, February 10, at 7:30 p.m.
