Pipers control second half en route to win over Scots

The opening seven minutes of play saw the scoreboard tied up three times. The host Scots then began a run that gave them the lead for the next seven minutes.

At 7:12 in the half, Tyler Pannell (Fy., Portland, Ore.) drained a trey that put the Pipers up 24-23. That ignited an 8-0 run that put the Pipers up by six, 29-23 at 5:48.

The Pipers would go on to lead by that same amount at the intermission, 37-31.

At the start of the second half, Carl Hipp (Sr., Little Canada, Minn.) put six points on the board in the opening three minutes, helping Hamline increase their lead to nine, 45-36, at 16:53.

Macalester couldn't get any closer than four until the five-minute mark of the game, when they cut their deficit to two, 66-64, on a Kyle Hamblett three-pointer.

Brandon Rieg (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) sank a pair of free throws and Hipp added five more points, bringing the Piper lead back up nine, 73-64, at 3:07.

Hamline controlled from there, ultimately winning by 10, 81-71.

Mike Campbell (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) led the Pipers with 19 points and nine rebounds while Hipp added 18 points and seven board. Campbell also had two blocked shots.

All 11 Pipers who saw playing time scored points, each one scoring a minimum of three points.

Hamblett led Macalester with 20 points.

The Pipers are now 6-5, 4-2 MIAC while the Scots are 1-9, 1-5 MIAC after the conference contest. Hamline remains on the road, playing at St. Olaf on Wednesday, January 12, at 7:30 p.m.
