The opening seven minutes of play saw the scoreboard tied up three
times. The host Scots then began a run that gave them the lead for the
next seven minutes.
At 7:12 in the half, Tyler Pannell (Fy., Portland, Ore.) drained a
trey that put the Pipers up 24-23. That ignited an 8-0 run that put the
Pipers up by six, 29-23 at 5:48.
The Pipers would go on to lead by that same amount at the intermission, 37-31.
At the start of the second half, Carl Hipp (Sr., Little Canada,
Minn.) put six points on the board in the opening three minutes, helping
Hamline increase their lead to nine, 45-36, at 16:53.
Macalester couldn't get any closer than four until the five-minute
mark of the game, when they cut their deficit to two, 66-64, on a Kyle
Hamblett three-pointer.
Brandon Rieg (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) sank a pair of free throws and
Hipp added five more points, bringing the Piper lead back up nine,
73-64, at 3:07.
Hamline controlled from there, ultimately winning by 10, 81-71.
Mike Campbell (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) led the Pipers with 19 points
and nine rebounds while Hipp added 18 points and seven board. Campbell
also had two blocked shots.
All 11 Pipers who saw playing time scored points, each one scoring a minimum of three points.
Hamblett led Macalester with 20 points.
The Pipers are now 6-5, 4-2 MIAC while the Scots are 1-9, 1-5 MIAC
after the conference contest. Hamline remains on the road, playing at
St. Olaf on Wednesday, January 12, at 7:30 p.m.
